Why is Q345B steel recommended over Q235 for high masts?

Engineering Insight: Why Q345B Steel is the Standard for High Mast Poles

When browsing for high mast lighting solutions, you will often see two main steel grades mentioned: Q235 and Q345B. At Jieyao Lighting, we strongly recommend Q345B (equivalent to ASTM A572 or S355) for all poles exceeding 15 meters.

While Q235 is suitable for standard street lights, high masts require the superior mechanical properties of Q345B for several critical reasons:


1. Higher Yield Strength (The Safety Factor)

The "345" in Q345B stands for its minimum yield strength of 345 MPa, whereas Q235 only offers 235 MPa.

  • The Benefit: Q345B is approximately 50% stronger than Q235.

  • Why it matters: High mast poles carry heavy headframes and must withstand massive wind loads at great heights. Using Q345B allows the pole to be stronger without becoming excessively heavy or thick.


2. Better Wind Resistance & Weight Efficiency

Because Q345B has a higher strength-to-weight ratio, it allows for a more efficient design.

  • Wind Stability: A Q345B pole can better resist the "bending moments" caused by high-speed winds (typhoons or hurricanes) compared to Q235, which is more prone to permanent deformation under extreme stress.

  • Structural Longevity: Even under constant vibration and swaying, Q345B maintains its structural integrity longer, reducing the risk of metal fatigue.


3. Superior Low-Temperature Toughness

The "B" in Q345B indicates that the steel is tested for impact toughness at 20°C.

  • The Advantage: This makes Q345B much more reliable in colder climates. Q235 can become brittle and crack under stress when temperatures drop, whereas Jieyao’s Q345B poles remain resilient and safe year-round.


4. Cost-Effective in the Long Run

Many buyers are tempted by the lower initial cost of Q235. However, at Jieyao Lighting, we believe in providing value over the entire product lifecycle.
